Have you heard the saying, ‘beauty comes from within’? If you've followed us for long, than you probably have since we've said it before.  It’s true, we are what we eat. Everything we put into our bodies affects us in some way from the water we drink to the carbohydrates we choose. In this article we are going to look at how certain foods can give you a beautiful complexion, which you can include as part of your skin care regime.

Foods which will help to give you beautiful skin and a glowing complexion...

Amazing Avocados

Avocados really are amazing and they are at the top of our list for good reason! They are a source of healthy fat and are one of nature's foods! So why are they great for your skin?

That lovely green color is down to the chlorophyll they contain. This natural substance helps to reduce inflammation, provide water to hydrate and Vitamin E to promote softness and prevent wrinkles. This makes avocado a great food to consume and to use as a natural facemask - if you are ever in a pinch that is. Avocado also contains antioxidants such as lutein and beta carotene, both which help soften the skin if applied directly. Not only can you give your skin a glow by eating these, you can also apply them directly to your skin too. Why not make a moisturizing mask of mashed avocado with 1 teaspoon honey? Easy but effective and a real treat for the skin.

Courageous Kale

Kale is a green, leafy, cruciferous vegetable that is rich in nutrients and offers a large range of health benefits for the whole body. They are a good plant-based source of calcium, a nutrient that is very important for bone health and plays a role in all sorts of cellular functions.

Want a more youthful appearance? Be sure to add kale into your diet! The tasty, green leaf has a lot to offer!

Kale is loaded with vitamin C, vitamin A and vitamin K which help repair skin tissues, prevent free radical damage and give you a radiant and fresh look. What’s more, the vitamin K in kale helps to reduce the dark circles under your eyes and 'tightens' your skin, thereby reducing fine lines and wrinkles.

Kale is very versatile so add it into your smoothies, throw onto your salad or pasta, or bake it and make your own healthy chips!

Perfect Pumpkin

Pumpkins might not have been what you were expecting on this list, but they really aren't just for Halloween. The seeds from a pumpkin are probably one of the beauty industry's best kept secrets!

Do you suffer from oily skin? Pumpkin seeds contain zinc along with natural selenium; both of which help to combat the cause of oily skin making it appear healthier and cleaner looking. Pumpkin seeds are also antioxidant rich and contain an abundance of vitamin E. Pumpkin seeds also help to protect your skin from environmental stressors such as pollution and stress.

Eat a handful of pumpkin seeds, or sprinkle over a salad or pasta dish to brighten your complexion and get the glow you’ve always wanted.

Super Strawberries

Who doesn’t love strawberries? When it comes to a glowing complexion, there’s not much that strawberries can’t do for you. The sweet, succulent and juicy fruit can help to give you a natural glow. Want a smoother complexion? Then you need to start adding strawberries to your breakfast oats, smoothie, pancakes or omelets. The tasty red fruit is rich in alpha-hydroxy acid which helps get rid of dead skin cells. Strawberries also boost collagen production which helps to minimize fine line and wrinkles. Strawberries contain loads of vitamin C and can be used to make awesome facemasks to fight oily skin, as well as nourish and revitalize your skin. Strawberries are acidic in nature and this is effective to remove the excess sebum on skin as well as naturally lightening it. The juice is also very efficient in lightening blemishes and acne scars - who knew?!

Clever Carrots

The orange vegetable is a powerhouse of nutrients! The great thing about carrots is that they are so versatile, making them easy to consume. You can munch on a carrot raw, add shaved carrot to salads or cook them as part of a good meal. Not only do carrots help you see in the dark (pull that out the next time you need a little small talk inspiration), they are excellent for glowing skin due to the large amount of beta carotene they contain that helps prevent the degeneration of cells, slows aging and makes your skin really glow. Carrots can protect your skin from the sun's rays while also protecting it from harmful radiation. Studies have shown that drinking carrot juice is thought to boost immunity and improve eye and skin health, among other benefits.

Carrots are very easy to incorporate into your daily eating rituals! You can chop them up and eat them raw as a tasty, guilt free snack, have them as a side dish to accompany a main meal.

To wrap it up…

Have there been any surprises with some of those foods? How many do you consume in your weekly food intake? A healthy, balanced diet rich in an abundance of fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds and proteins is the best way to achieve a healthy glow. Be mindful with your food choices and think about your health when you are making choices.

Remember the saying goes, you are what you eat! Nourish your body with the right foods, nutrients, vitamins and minerals it needs to perform and look at it's best. Most ailments and beauty issues can be fixed with the correct nutrition and foods.
